Hi! My name is Sue Houghton. Welcome to my online art gallery based in Kent. Its great to have you here!
Acquiring art is very much about finding something that resonates, a piece that has a heart and a story. Whether you are looking for art for your own home, or for a gift, an original one-off piece of art offers the opportunity to own something special and unique.
Here you will find the perfect place to:
-browse an eclectic selection of art
-buy original works, in oils and acrylics, at prices from £100 to £600
-have your art framed in high quality handmade solid oak and ash frames
-commission a unique painting to suit a particular space or size.
Why buy original art? To me it is all about that piece that talks to you, about finding a painting that resonates, one that you think would be perfect on a wall in your home. The ultimate pleasure for me is seeing a client drawn to a painting that I have had joy in creating. I hope you enjoy my art and the energy within each piece.
I appreciate it can be hard to know if a painting seen on a website is right for you, and I can assure you that seeing the original work for real is so much more exciting! So if you live within a 20 mile radius of Westerham, and wish to see the art in your own home to get a proper feel for the piece before buying, I am happy to deliver my art for you to try. Or you can collect and try it in your home “on approval”.
And finally to give you confidence here are some recent customer messages :
“ We love it Sue. It gives me a little lift of joy every time I pass it. Your art is wonderful”
”I am so happy with the painting. I can go to the beach anytime I chose now”
”I can’t tell you how much joy your art brings into my life”
I’m so thrilled with your divine paintings!…I do hope no-one has got there first…it is an image that has stayed with me since seeing it!”
”…really overjoyed to have your art in my life”
”It’s the best present I have ever received, and probably ever will do.”
”We absolutely love the (commission)”
Be original - buy direct from the artist!!

VIEW MY ART HERE:
Sea, seascapes, rivers, lakes, beaches and boats. I find such joy in creating my seascapes, and recently have found myself moving much more into exploring the abstraction of shapes which I hope inspires you the viewer to interpret them too. Movement of water and waves, shifting sands, the beauty of a coastal sky and the flowing shapes of boats - a seascape ,can be energising, evocative, resonant with memories
We think of sea colours as shades of blue, but when you really look at water it is anything but blue. There are greys and greens, streaks of purples, ochre and hints of browns. Low winter sun brings silvers, and sunsets bring stunning oranges that look almost unreal. Shadows bring rich chocolate purple browns.
My art is all framed in hand made natural wood frames. Some of the available works are also shown as if hung, to help make it easier for you to imagine them on a wall. Art at the bottom of the page represents some of my sold work and commissions.
Part of my new series of work.
As the tide swirled in and the waters deepened they formed geometric shapes in a palette of tonal blues from pale cerulean to deeper navy. I hope this reflects the calm waters and sense of peace as the colours subtly shift with the ebb and flow of the sea.
Oil on canvas
43cm x 53cm
Inspired by a recent weekend on the south coast, at a beach cafe, on a calm misty morning. Perfect karma!
Oil on stretched canvas 52cm x 52cm
Completing my series of coastal paintings exploring shapes and the gentle interaction of a limited palette of tonal colours.
Oil on stretched canvas 53cm x 53cm.
Gentle tones in the water from the clouds reflected on the wet sand , burnished with gold leaf.
Oil on stretched canvas. 45cm x 45cm
The iconic Seven Sisters, always a joy to walk and a joy to paint! Oil on stretched canvas 36cm x 47cm
I spotted this old rickety wooden pier in the Camel Estuary with the 3 small boats safe and secure, as a strong breeze sent wispy clouds scudding across the sky. A sense of sun and safety.
Oil on canvas board 38cm x 38cm
Inspired by rainy beach walks, where the sky drops down into the horizon .
Oil on stretched canvas 53cm x 53cm
Winter days bring mists and calm to the Margate coast. Part 1 of my new series of oils exploring the abstraction of shapes, tones and curves to create a sense of calming movement.
Oil on stretched canvas 53cm x 53cm
Inspired by early morning as the tide curved and flowed out past the harbour wall. No 2 of a new series of works.
Oil on canvas 53 x 53cm.
Soft muted tones on a rainy day, inspired by beached boats resting in the sand safe behind the harbour wall. No 3 of a new series of works.
Oil on canvas 53 x 53cm.
Three sailing boats leaving harbour and setting sail against cloudy reflections. I wanted to draw the eye to the sails and I think that the four layers of oils applied with brush and then palette knife, using a limited mix of tones, works really well to suggest the calm and constant power of the sea.
Oil on board 58cm x 70cm
I wanted to create an image of the sunshine of summer combined with the sea, and I think this really works here. A focal piece to light up a room!
Oil on stretched canvas 84cm x 84cm framed.
London’s skyscraper lights shining through the gloaming as the sun sinks. Calm and peaceful and as the city sleeps.
Oil on board 58cm x 72cm
If only one could capture the sounds of the crashing waves ! Waves cascading and crashing, shingle whooshing back and forth. I really enjoyed working on this piece and hope that the image resonates with all who have sat on a beach, soaking up the energy of the endless blue rollers.
Oil on canvas 50cm x 65cm
Early morning and no one was about - so peaceful. The shadows of the old timbers reflect in the dark contour ridges of the distant hills.
Oil on stretched canvas 53cm x 53cm
The curves and shadows as the tide flowed out, and the reflections in the shallows inspired me to capture this transient moment in time.
Oil on stretched canvas 44cm x 54cm
Dramatic skies gathering at the end of the day over the gentle waters of an incoming tide on the south coast.
Oil on stretched canvas 44cm x 54cm
Visiting Wisley whilst the water lilies were starting to bloom, I hope this larger work captures the tranquility of the falling water and the gorgeous colours in the lake offset by the purple of the lilies.
Oil on Canvas 76cm x 76cm
The iconic blue boats of Essaouria’s fishing fleet on the Atlantic coast of Morocco reflect years of tradition in this colourful harbour town.
Oil on Board 48 cm x 48 cm
Under blue summer skies I was captivated by the almost geometric clouds reflected in gentle shapes on the sea. So peaceful and quiet, walking in the early morning. A couple with their dog on the beach, with three sail boats gently sailing in the distance. It was so relaxing, and this is that calm day, captured and framed!
Oil on canvas board 41cm x 41cm
A calm sunny day on the south coast, a couple with their dog on the beach, with three sail boats gently sailing in the distance. It was so relaxing, and this is that calm day, captured and framed!
Oil on canvas 41cm x 41cm
Walking along the Cornish coast to Port Isaac, the overcast day enhanced the gentle tones of the houses that, when viewed from above the harbour, seemed to melt into the colours of the sea as it lapped on the slipway. Classic evocative Cornwall!
Oil on Board 46cm x 64cm
St Ives is the epitome of a Cornish harbour with fishing cottages along the harbour wall and narrow lanes behind, as if nothing more could possibly be squeezed in. When the tide comes in and the traditional fishing boats float up onto their moorings it looks so pretty.
Oil on stretched canvas 48cm x 58cm
Houses along the quayside cast long shadows over the calm waters of the small harbour, and the fishing boats caught my eye as they bobbed at anchor, waiting for the night sail. It was quite a detailed study to capture the houses and their gentle pastel colours, but I also wanted to incorporate an abstract element to suggest the continual rhythm of harbour life.
Oil on stretched canvas 43cm x 55cm
I really enjoyed creating this happy abstract as it seemed that the boats, with their cheery shapes, were inextricable linked by ropes and anchors to the shore and the houses along the quayside.
Oil on stretched canvas 60cm x 60cm
Continuing my love of coast and harbour, this is Tenby at high tide , boats bobbing at anchor and with its iconic houses framing the harbour wall.
Oil on board 30cm x 49cm
I so enjoyed painting this little book shop in Venice and its piles and piles of books. What luxury to be able to curl up with a book overlooking a quiet Venetian canal!
Oil on Board 55cm x 45cm
Experimenting with the placement of small strokes to evoke the wonderfully loose impressionism of Monet’s style. I love how he portrayed his figures, and I hope i have done his work justice in this homage.
Oil on Stretched Canvas 50cm x 66cm
Early morning calm at the top of the tide, fishing rods set. No 4 of a my new series of works.
Oil on canvas 53 x 53cm.
Working on texture and contrasting forms to reflect how safe anchorage brings stability in a shifting world, and how we all need to have our anchors. Inspired by Rye Harbour.
Oil on board 62cm x 75cm
Inspired from summer beach walks, and the gorgeous bright blues reflected from a summer sky.
Oil on stretched canvas, 85cm x 85cm framed
A quiet morning walk down to the shore at Studland inspired this work - a light breeze rippled the water, reflecting the pale morning sunshine
Oil on stretched canvas 45cm x 45cm
Unframed to maintain the trompe l’oeil feel of peering out and over the sea wall. A fun piece which I hope brings a smile to the viewer. I loved the relaxed quirkiness of this work, and the fun of the abstract two dimensional approach. One to raise the spirits!
Available framed if preferred.
Acrylic on stretched canvas 70cm x 70cm
A stormy day as clouds scudded across the skies inspired me to create this large work in shades of indigo, one of my favourite blues as it as so many hues. It would make a great statement piece in its own space.
Oil on stretched canvas 85cm x 85 cm
Sometimes the sky is so blue it seems that painting it like it is will look too blue to be true! But on this day the sky was cerulean and the sea was washed with turquoise. And this is the English coast!! It deserved to shine on a large statement piece canvas.
Oil on stretched board 85cm x 85cm
Walking along the Oare Estuary I found wrecks of old abandoned boat hulls lying half submerged in the mudflats. On a misty autumn morning as the sky merged into the watery landscape their sculptural curves and shadows resonated with times past and I wanted to record their forgotten history.
Oil on board 75 x 60cm framed
This is a view from the north Kent coast near Faversham across the Swale estuary. A study in thick layers of impasto palette knife work which I feel works really well to create a sense of depth and movement. Perfect for a small space!
Oil on board 31cm x 36cm
A small study of sail boats filled with wind and racing over the waves off the south coast.
Oil on board 18cm x 13cm
Shades of indigo - elegant tonal colours capture balance in the vast openness of the sea with gold leaf reflections.
Oil on Board, black wood frame 20cm x 30cm
A truly uplifting moment captured whilst watching the sunset spreading fiery orange across the sky and the reflections stretching across the wet sand.
Oil on Board 40 x 70cm
Oil on board, a client’s commission
The Sorolla exhibition at The National Gallery is one of the best and most uplifting I have visited. In fact I went twice! His use of light and tone was truly phenomenal, and on a grey November day I left the Gallery feeling full of sunshine. So this is my tribute to a great artist.
Oil on canvas board 45cm x 55cm
The figures seemed almost absorbed into the scene, under huge skies with the sea to the distant horizom. For me it captured the peace and sense of calm of a deserted shore.
Oil on board 38cm x 48cm
Who can resist the joy and happy vibes of blue sky, blue seas and white sand!! This is a large feature work that involved layers and texture. It creates impact in a big space.
Oil on stretched canvas 84cm x 84cm framed
Inspired by old boats beached at low tide. The low light made the perfect silhouette backdrop.
Oil on Board
40 x 40cm
An abstract of one of the creeks that wends its way to the Medway at Oare. In full summer the soft wafting grasses in the shallows contrast perfectly with the geometric shapes of the contoured pastures and fields around it. A painting full of joy and vibrant summer colours! A few sketches and then on to the pub at Conyer Creek for a cooling drink!
Oil on Stretched Canvas 48cm x 57cm
Oil on board
60cm x 45cm
I wanted to create texture and light to capture the evocative low tide reflections on the wet sand so, having set down a base layer in oils I then gradually worked up the layers using a palette knife. I think it worked!

Walking along the north Kent coast estuary, from Whitstable on beyond Reculver . Such a lovely walk, frequented by occasional bird watchers and dog walkers. Its a very peaceful corner of Kent. Quiet, with a hint of desolation, rushes wafting in the ever present breeze, seabirds wheeling on the wind, and in the distance the gentle shores of the Isle of Sheppey falling down to the estuary.

The Seven Sisters is a favourite walk of mine and no matter what the weather, it’s such an invigorating landscape. This day the dark rain clouds were clearing, and on the path out to the cliffs the sun was just starting to light up the fields in shifting shadows that ebbed and flowed over the folding fields.

Capturing memories of places and views.
The reflections of light on the wet pavements of a city can look fabulous on a wet rainy evening. Trees at a local reservoir are transformed by a wintry sunset into a fiery scene, and the warm colour tones of foreign places recall memories of scent, noise and heat.
My art is all framed in hand made natural wood frames. Some of the available works are also shown as if hung, to help make it easier for you to imagine them on a wall. Art at the bottom of the page represents some of my sold work and commissions.
Living near the North Downs their silhouette is always an inspiration for my art as their fields fold and fall along the skyline. On a misty morning walk they lift the spirits on a winter day.

The North Downs often provide inspiration for my art. Their fields on an early morning walk in winter take on soft, warm earthy tones of grey that fold and fall from the skyline.

Quiet frosts on the Downs touch the folding hills with cool whispers in the pale winter light.

I so enjoyed painting this little book shop in Venice and its piles and piles of books. What luxury to be able to curl up with a book overlooking a quiet Venetian canal!
Oil on Board 55cm x 45cm
Away from the crowds in Venice, meandering along winding canals, with the most gorgeous soft warm colours and reflections. I just had to get painting!
Oil on stretched canvas 72cm x 56cm
Earthy colours mirrored in the waters of a quiet canal. Beautiful, romantic iconic and unforgettable. It took quite some hours to paint as I really wanted to capture the tones and reflections, and to take the viewer along with me, wondering what lay beyond the bridge.
Oil on stretched canvas 64cm x 54cm
Cool reflections as an early gondolier heads out before the crowds. Surely one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It is truly absorbing, and never forgotten. I got completely lost in painting these “off the beaten track” reflections and the perspective as the canal wound into the distance
Oil on stretched canvas 74cm x 54cm

A wintery landscape on the downs. I hope I have captured the gentle greys of winter in the cool folding fields.

One of my favourite spring walks through the fields and down into Westerham, with the North Downs in the distance.

A very hot day on a walking holiday in northern Tuscany. I love olive trees, partly for their gnarled shape and the way the sunlight sits on their leaves, but also for their history. What stories they could tell! This grove, with the sun on the grey green leaves and the warm shadows epitomised Tuscany - and provided some welcome shade for a picnic!

I don’t usually paint traditional country scenes, but I loved the tall grasses and swathes of reed beds. An idyllic summer scene to remind us of peaceful sunny days - especially in the depths of winter!
Oil on canvas 38cm x 38cm , framed in ash on a pale linen background
Wildlife can be such fun to paint - a llama with attitude or a quirky cow, the majesty of a tiger or an elephant in the swirling dust of the African summer. They might be big and powerful but have the gentlest of eyes, the softest of noses. Daft, superior, sad - it is all there in their faces. Affordable original animal art. Plus my occasional and very enjoyable diversions into some still life studies.
Sometimes I have the urge to paint an elephant! I’m not sure if it their gentle eyes, those huge ears or the gorgeous markings on their trunks that appeal to me, but having been lucky to see them in their natural environment they are but this time I wanted to do a tonal study using only 4 colours, and im really pleased at the result. Somehow the limited colours have great a sense of gentleness within this huge animal.
Who can resist an elephant!

I bought these vegetables in my local Italian deli, unpacked them at home and their shapes and rich colours most definitely called for a painting. So this is my brief foray into “Kitchen Art” !

For this study I used a couple of pale watercolour washes and then pencil to create the face as it seemed too delicate for paint. Abstraction and interpretation. Everyday items with a twist.
Contemporary art is fun. Van Gogh’s “Chair” with an “Apple” - why not? Contemporary art offers the chance to use vibrant colours, pare down shapes to simple concepts, and bring in form and impact that is sometimes blurred in real life portrayal. And it is affordable!

Painting people is a window into their soul. Caught in the moment a face can speak a thousand words.
The tones of skin are fascinating, with their blues, greys and greens. Eyes are intriguing to paint, conveying passion, strength, joy, sadness and so much more unspoken feelings. And then there is the surprising size of noses and ears!
Then there are the folds and shades of clothes and the movement of fabrics in the wind.
Faces - always a challenge and totally absorbing!
